Second Harvest of the Big Bend is pleased to announce John Martin as the food bank’s 2020 “Volunteer of the Year.” Martin is an inaugural member of Second Harvest’s Volunteer Hall of Fame, and is a Legacy-level award winner, with more than 1,500 volunteer service hours dedicated.
“We are thrilled to recognize John as our volunteer of the year,” said Shari Hubbard, director of community relations for Second Harvest. “John epitomizes dedication, leadership and positivity; in short, he is a dream volunteer,” she added.
John has a long history with Second Harvest. As a district manager for Arnold Breads, he began delivering bread donations to the food bank about 12 years ago, becoming familiar with the food bank’s mission and operations.
John served on Second Harvest’s Board of Directors for a year, and after his retirement from Arnold Breads, he became an avid volunteer, and has been serving Second Harvest diligently for more than six years. He is a leader with the team who handles date-checking, package integrity inspections, and boxing of donated food. Each year, John and his fellow volunteers inspect and pack hundreds of thousands of pounds of food for distribution to Second Harvest’s partner agencies across the Big Bend.
Second Harvest is delighted to present John with a certificate for a complimentary vacation at Steinhatchee Landing Resort, courtesy of the resort in recognition of his time and talents dedicated to serving his community as a food bank volunteer.
“We thank Steinhatchee Landing Resort for their generosity and enthusiastic support of our volunteer program,” said Shari Hubbard. “We hope this will be a getaway John and his wife can anticipate and look forward to enjoying in the near future, when travel restrictions are lifted, and our lives normalize.”
Congratulations, John!
