Faces of Our Food Bank: Curtis Smithen

March 19, 2024

What do you do at the food bank?

I am the Director of Operations, I have worked for Second Harvest for over 13 years and was promoted to this new position in November of 2023! I oversee the warehouse, logistics and the facility.

How did you end up in this role?

Before working here, I worked at Lowes while also attending school to become a firefighter, but a friend recommended that I come work here at Second Harvest and I knew that it was a good opportunity. I began at Second Harvest in 2010 as a warehouse associate/driver where I did the retail pick-ups and deliveries and at the end of the day I had to come back in and pull orders for the next day, so we did it all. And after working a few different positions and seeing all the parts of the organization, I was offered my current role!

What is your favorite part about your job?

I love that I am given the opportunity to touch the lives of so many people in so many different areas, as we serve 16 counties. I get to stretch out and help and it makes me happy that the same thing we are doing in the Tallahassee community we are also doing in so many other communities.

What motivated you to fight hunger?

Knowing that I was once someone who needed assistance, I am thankful to be able to give back and serve the community. Helping the community and helping people is what I love to do. You never know when you could possibly end up needing help, so I want to help as much as I can.

Favorite memory?

I have so many good memories, but one that comes to mind specifically is when Baton Rouge Louisiana was hit by a hurricane, we received a call that they needed some assistance, so we loaded up our rig and headed their way to get them back on their feet and feed people in the community. We were there for about a week but while we were serving the community, the community members were also serving us by giving us free haircuts and other things to show their gratitude for the work we were doing. These people didn’t know us, but they were so thankful that we were able to help.

What do you do in your free time?

I like to RELAX! I like to spend time with my family, my wife and kids, but sometimes I also get to go back to West Palm where I am from and see my mom, brothers and sisters, and their children.
