Meet Heather Salvo, one of our extraordinary volunteers at Second Harvest, whose dedication has spanned over three years. Heather’s journey with us began amidst the pandemic, driven by a desire to spread love during uncertain times. Since then, she has selflessly devoted her time, contributing a remarkable 320 volunteer hours to our cause.
During the summer, Heather enthusiastically participated in our Backpack Blitz event, a crucial initiative aimed at providing students in need with nutritious food over the weekends. Reflecting on her experience, Heather shared, “This year was my first year volunteering at the Blitz. I did two shifts, and it was extremely exciting to see how many people came out,”
Heather’s commitment to ending hunger in the Big Bend region is truly commendable, and we extend our heartfelt gratitude to her for her invaluable contributions. Her willingness to utilize her time and talents to support our mission embodies the spirit of compassion and community involvement.
“I began volunteering with the intention of giving back,” Heather explains. “For anyone seeking meaningful ways to support their community, Second Harvest offers a direct and impactful avenue. Here, you can witness firsthand the difference you make and the lives you touch.” And Heather also explained to us that while at Second Harvest, she was truly moved by all of the amazing, fresh and sustaining products that are going out into the community and reaching our neighbors in need.

This year marks the 11th annual Walmart and Sam’s Club Fight Hunger. Spark Change. (FHSC) campaign, which runs from April 1st to April 29th 2024. The objective of FHSC is to increase awareness of our shared commitment to fight hunger and raise funds for local Feeding America partner food banks.
